hamid karzai may not be around thoerk though. here is one of the issues that could be on the agenda. there is supposed to be elections in afghanistan next year. he says he's not going to stay on, he wants to retire as president. he's been in office now for more than 10 years as the president of afghanistan. he's been the only president of afghanistan since 9/11 back in 2001. i don't know who the next president of afghanistan is going to be. i know that the afghan government of hamid karzai is talking to the taliban in doha, qatar, and, remember, this gets really complicated and confusing because the u.s. went to war in afghanistan to deal with the taliban, to get rid of the taliban, which was protecting al qaeda and bin laden and gave them sanctuary there from which they could go ahead and plot attacks against the united states like the attack on 9/11. so it is going to be a messy situation. i think it is fair to say there are a lot of uncertainties. will it in the end have a very, very positive ending? i'm not so sure it will. i

that's also the key issue today between president obama and hamid karzai in their meetings. despite his request for a large american residual force after 2014, karzai recently told nbc's atia that afghan troops are ready to take over. >> on the question of the readiness, the preparedness of the afghan security forces, they are quite ready. i can say with confidence to handle the security of the country, the trust of this country and to receive the full transition to them in 2014, rather, in 2013 and to have the departure of the foreign forces from afghanistan completed in 2014. zoom a strong advocate for chuck hagel for the pentagon job. general, welcome. thank you very much. >> nice to be with you. thank you. >> tell me why you think chuck hagel is the right person for this job despite all the controversy that has been raised about what he said about israel in the past and iran in the past, criticisms of some of his other statements certainly the statements about gay americans. >> i think for two, maybe three reasons. first of all, he is a very solid, sound thinker. he has

hamid karzai has privately said that he favors a more robust u.s. troop presence but today, of course, he said troops are less important than the u.s. cooperation. but of course, there is war fatigue in this country and also concerns about the cost of this. we just saw that big knock down drag out fight during the fiscal cliff negotiations. so president obama feels as though he is emboldened to some extent to try to withdraw troops because he thinks that he has basically the support of a lot of members of congress who don't necessarily think that this is the best way to spend u.s. dollars so a lot of question marks remaining but again the big headline out of this bilateral meeting between president obama and afghan president hamid karzai is it does appear that the draw down accelerating and waiting to hear, toure, what the troop levels look like after 2014. >> all right. thank you very much. >> reporter: thanks. >>> joining us now is former u.s. ambassador to morocco, mark ginsburg. how are you? >> good to be with you. >> hey, look. we know it's imp
